Alexander Mattison Overview:
The main reason for owning Alexander Mattison is that he is the highest-level possible handcuff for Dalvin Cook. Outside of that, he doesn’t really get enough targets or carries to sustain any fantasy football value on a week-to-week basis. But, given that Dalvin Cook left us at the most inopportune time last season… for the third straight year… out of three, spending a pick or a few bucks on Mattison is a worthwhile selection in your fantasy drafts.
Now, this didn’t work out for you last year. Maybe it was a pre-quake tremor, or maybe it was a fluke, but Mattison was hurt the week before Dalvin Cook went down with a shoulder injury that kept him out the rest of the year. Still, as the saying goes, you’re looking for process over results. Having a talent like Alexander Mattison around for the inevitable broken weeks from Dalvin Cook. Outside of that, he offers very little to the fantasy football community.
Alexander Mattison Draft Strategy:

If you get Dalvin Cook, snag Alexander Mattison, I guess? He doesn’t get a lot of touches, and unless they suddenly switch to a 50/50 timeshare or a 60/40 timeshare, that isn’t likely to change. It’s a fairly straightforward cost-benefit analysis here, but it does get into a deeper conversation: handcuffs. There are probably three guys who have production worth handcuffing who have handcuffs that are worth their while: Dalvin Cook (Mattison), Ezekiel Elliott (Tony Pollard), and Alvin Kamara (Latavius Murray). Outside of that, it’s a waste of a roster spot.
So, here’s the tl;dr: If you have Dalvin Cook, then you should get Alexander Mattison. If you don’t have Cook, don’t clog up your squad with Mattison… but be ready to empty your FAAB should Cook go down for the year… again. There’s something to be said of drafting him now while Cook apparently threatens to hold out, but I wouldn’t waste the spot on that. My gut tells me Cook is playing this year. The rules changed to prevent a 2018 Lev Bell situation again.
Best Case Scenario:
I don’t like to put injury Joo Joo into the air so… Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison share a suddenly robust number of touches in a backfield that provides plenty, and he ends up a weekly flex option. Again, without injuries or a holdout, this is the best-case scenario.
Worst Case Scenario:
Dalvin Cook plays sixteen games, but you went to bed at night clutching your Alexander Mattison body pillow, safe and secure, all year long.
